REVEALING TRUTHS: MUSLIM WOMEN
ARTISTS (28 February -
1 May 2003 ) was a stunning exhibition of the work of Heba
Amin, Salma Aratsu, Muhammadi Zuhal Karamanli, Salima Raoui
and Huda Totonji. The exhibition included painting, mixed
media and calligraphy.
Originally launched earlier this
year(2003) in New York by Ayse Turgut in collaboration with
Denise Melroy of Aramona Studio, this exhibition was brought
to Washington, DC by Sabi Behzadi, consultant to the Gallery.
The goal of this powerful exhibition was to increase awareness
of the work of contemporary women artists while, challenging
stereotypes of Muslim women as represented in the media.

INSIGHT &
INSPIRATION: THE FINE ART OF ARTIST HEALERS (22
November 2002 - 21 February 2003) featured the work of fine
artists who are also healers, such as art therapists, physical
therapists, alternative healing practitioners, educators and
counselors. They "...know expertly the healing impact of
images," says Frances A. Smokowski, MAAT, ATR-BC,
Exhibition Coordinator, and herself, an artist healer. She
continues, "Art can make a difference on a cultural
scale-providing solace and hope in the face of violence and
insecurity."
INSIGHT &
INSPIRATION comprised 22 works selected
"...from a marvelously varied and inventive group [of
entries]." Works were included based "...on
aesthetic quality and each artist's commitment to the healing
nature of art for the human spirit," says juror Linda
Crocker Simmons, Curator Emeritus of the Corcoran Gallery of
Art in Washington, DC. INSIGHT & INSPIRATION is a
fascinating and original exhibition.
